Technetium Medicine Applications

Tc-99m where m stands for metastable nuclear isomer is used in radioactive isotope medical tests, i.e. radioactive tracer medical equipment used to detect in the body. This is perfect way of detection because the isotope emits detectable gamma rays of 140 ke V. Its half life is about 6.01 hours. As per the Schwochau’s book Technetium, 31 radiopharmaceuticals based on the isotope Technetium 99m. This is used for imaging and functional study of myocardium, thyroid, brain, liver, lungs, gallbladder, skeleton, blood, kidneys and tumors. Due to short time of decay it will eliminate from body with in few days.

Tc-99m used for the treatment called as immunoscintigraphy, in this treatment technetium incorporates in monoclonal body. The resistant system proteins are able to bind cancer cells. After few hours, the equipment detects gamma rays emitted by technetium which are concentrated around tumor. The technique is useful for cancer which is hard to detect and affecting intestine. This anti body are sold by a German company and known as ‘Scintium’.

Tc-99m is capable to combine with red blood cells help to draw circulatory system disorders. Also Tc-99m used to detect gastrointestinal bleeding.

Technetium Industrial Applications

Technetium is the first radioactive element which is used in radioactive tracer. This tracer is used to study the activity of technetium in environment, planet and in the animal system. For this Tc 95m is used which has half life of 61 days.

Technetium-99 is used for equipment calibration standard beta emitter in NIST. Technetium-99 decays by the process beta decay. It emits beta particles having consistent low energy and gamma rays. This isotope has long half life because of the emission speed decreases slowly. It causes to extract high chemical and isotopic purity from radioactive waste.

Technetium serves as a catalyst like rhenium and palladium. Technetium is more effective catalyst than these two elements for certain reactions like dehydrogenation and isopropyl alcohol.

Technetium 99 is offered for use in Optoelectronic nuclear batteries. Because Tc-99 beta decay electrons encourage an excimer mixture while light powered to photocell. The battery contains a pressure vessel with mirrored surface in internal side which filled with excimer mixture of argon or xenon. This mixture divided in to Tc-99 and ultrasonic stirrer which enlightens photocell with a tuned band gap.
